Wicked Review

It’s been 4 long years since Wicked first graced the Lyric Theatre in Brisbane. Last Sunday one of the great Musical Theatre productions of all time came back to treat QPAC audiences again.

Wicked tells the story of two unlikely friends, Glinda (the Good Witch) and Elphaba (The Wicked Witch of the West) – aka The Green Witch. The timeline is set before Dorothy is transported into Oz. The connection they make in school and during their young adult life is a beautiful story and well told.

To be honest reading the program notes before the show didn’t fill me with excitement. What did excite me was the cast chosen for the show. Securing Jemma Rix (Elphaba), Suzie Mathers (Glinda), Simon Gallagher (The Wonderful Wizard of Oz) and an old TV icon favourite of mine, Maggie Kirkpatrick (Madame Morrible) was a stroke of genius by the casting gurus. The supporting members of the cast were equally outstanding and it was the talent that shone through that highlighted the overall performance.

As usual the set design and score was memorable but I felt the audio levels were a little too loud even though I was in row L in the stalls.

I encourage fans of The Wizard of Oz to purchase a ticket to see this box office smash hit. It’s one the whole family will enjoy.

Book tickets today to avoid disappointment. The show concludes at QPAC 19th April before moving to Perth at the Crown (3rd May to 28th June).
