Arts Access Australia and Weave Movement Theatre host a national dance intensive for artists with a disability at DANCEHOUSE, Melbourne
Over 6 weeks, 25 professional artists who have a disability are training with 4 Australian superstars of performance in a national first to address the critical need for artistic training for artists who have a disability. For some of the facilitators, it is the first time they have worked with a dance company for people who have a disability.
Yumi Umimare, Australia’s brilliant Japanese Butoh artist bought a terrific perspective to the company in her Butoh practice earlier this month, creating beautiful and authentic moving landscapes. Yumi challenged the group with images ranging from the hilarious (such as our laughing bums) to the grotesque (like the snake tongue), pushing our bodies and imagination (photos and video available). Currently, Michelle Heaven is teaching blending her own improvisational practice with the experience of the Weave ensemble as seasoned improvisers. In addition to her independent work, Michelle’s performance credits include dancer roles with Phillip Adams BalletLab, Chunky Move and KAGE among many others.
In September we welcome Olivia Millard and host a 3 day intensive with Caroline Bowditch – a dancer and choreographer with a significant disability who has forged an incredible career overseas as a professional, full time artist. Originally from Melbourne and founding member of Weave Movement Theatre, Caroline moved to the UK to start her career as a professional dancer with the Scottish Dance Theatre. Now based in the UK, her career has seen her work with Europe’s leading companies including Skanes Dansteatre (Sweden) and Dance4 (UK). In Australia for a very short time, Weave Movement Theatre is excited by the opportunity to learn from an Australian artist breaking waves in disability and the arts internationally.
This program of training is ground breaking in the Australian arts scene. We welcome media agents to get in touch with us. Training continues every Sunday at Dancehouse, Carlton until September 21 culminating in a 3 day intensive (September 19 – 21) with Caroline Bowditch.
