Les Miserables

A show that stirs your emotions

It’s been 17 years since Les Miserables graced the stage at QPAC. Cameron Mackintosh has excelled again in delivering an eye burning, awe inspiring and uplifting production to the Lyric Theatre. Les Miserables has been performed by many great iconic performers in the past but the young Aussie cast assembled have stamped their own signature style upon this masterpiece and their passion, belief for the story and character has shone through.

Jean Valjean (Simon Gleeson) excelled in this role as did (Hayden Tee) as Javert. Their stage interplay was mesmerizing as were their ability to carry out their characters to a world class standard. In fact there was not a weak link at all with the cast. I particularly warmed to the children and their characters. I laughed with Madame Thenardier and Thenardier at their bawdy routines. I felt tears rolling down my cheeks as Fantine (Patrice Tipoki) pledged Cosette (Emily Langridge) to Jean Valjean. A truly tender moment in time. (Kerry Anne Greenland) portrayed Eponine perfectly. What a voice ! The strong male characters of (Chris Durling) Enjolras and (Euan Doidge) Marius shone brightly.

Well done to the entire cast. You are a credit to the Performing Arts industry in this country.

The Story

I believed the story. In fact I was enveloped by it and all because the imagery, costuming and set design took me back to the early 1800’s. This is the secret to a wonderful production. Draw the audience in and let them also become players in the production. Well done Cameron Mackintosh for allowing this to happen.

Les Miserables delivers on so many levels but for me its about the storyline and the messages entangled inside those lines. Triumph is found in love over death. A mans’ worth is not valued by his actions in a short time; it’s by his actions over a lifetime. These lessons are valuable for all mankind.
