Discover a new world of dance from 12 to 20 February 2016 as some of China’s most talented and captivating dancers join Queensland’s own acclaimed ensemble from Expressions Dance Company (EDC) on stage at QPAC’s Cremorne Theatre.
Earlier this year EDC’s ensemble travelled to China to collaborate with Guangdong Modern Dance Company (GMDC), forming new relationships, creating new work and premiering it to delighted audiences there and now it is Australia’s turn!
EDC’s Artistic Director Natalie Weir said she is thrilled to build on the collaborative exchange of culture and dance with GMDC and present Black to Brisbane audiences.
“We are very excited to be presenting this showcase which will include an Australian premiere of Black – a piece the companies created together under the direction of acclaimed Hong Kong choreographer Xing Liang, as well as a piece each from GMDC and EDC,” she said.
In this Chinese-Australian collaboration, dancers from both companies will use materials and textures seen in their lives to collage the dreamlike, fleeting and ineffable charm of black.
Guangdong Modern Dance Company’s resident choreographer, Liu Qi, has created a work entitled Sumeru, revealing the connection between the elements of the earth and the elements of dance. According to an ancient saying, a grain as tiny as a mustard seed can reveal all the wonders of Mount Sumeru. Dance, like a mustard seed, may contain many interesting stories if you take a look inside.
The EDC ensemble will perform Don’t, a work by Natalie Weir that has never before been seen in Brisbane. Don’t explores the emotional power of words that come between us, words that inspire us and words we wish we had never said.
This trio of short contemporary works will showcase the stunning artistry and exhilarating physicality of these contemporary dancers. Don’t miss out!
