We Will Rock You – Brisbane Review

We Will Rock You, the worldwide smash hit musical by Queen and Ben Elton is coming to Brisbane!

Over 16 million theatregoers in 28 countries have been thrilled by this awe-inspiring production. We Will Rock You features stunning costumes, sets and lighting and 24 of Queen‘s legendary hits; We are the Champions, Radio Ga Ga, Crazy Little Thing Called Love, Somebody to Love, Killer Queen, Under Pressure, Bohemian Rhapsody, Another One Bites The Dust, and of course, We Will Rock You.

If you’ve been living under a rock for the past forty years then you won’t know that Queen’s hits made rock and roll what it is today. This modern day tale pitches future music against rock and roll. Who will win out !

The storyline behind the production is off beat, quirky, raw and memorable while the cast are simply devine. The lead cast of Gareth Keegan (Galilleo) and Erin Clarke (Scaramouche) owned the stage. The on-stage chemistry and vocals were beyond belief. I’d go so far as to say that without their believable chemistry and talent the show wouldn’t have been the same. I fully expected Brian Mannix and Casey Donovan to overshadow them but in fact it was the polar opposite.

Don’t mistake me, Casey and Brian were great, but Gareth and Erin were a class above. The supporting cast members of Thern Reynolds (Brit) and Jaz Flowers (Oz) and Simon Russell (Khashoggi) performed well. Of the 3 Jaz’s vocals stood out most.

There were moments where you forgot it was a musical theatre piece and imagined yourself at a rock concert. The Lyric’s acoustics were simply amazing and added to the surround sound effect that made every note the band played resonate with the audience.

My only negative would be the balance between music and voice was somewhat blended. Bring back the volume on the music so we can hear the vocals please. Other than that – spot on!

What a great night and a memorable show. Well done to all involved. We would encourage Brisbane to attend the show. Sure there are some M15+ moments but that’s Rock and Roll Baby.
