This production, adapted from George Orwell’s 1945 published novel of the same name, features 5 of the brightest young stars that Brisbane has to offer. All playing multiple roles, with very minor costuming – ears or a rope tail at most – the actors brought the animals to life in front of your eyes. They adopted characteristics of the animals they were portraying – voice, body movements, hands turned into trotters – all very believable. Orwell’s satirical novel of an animal rebellion on a farm is a metaphor for Stalin and the Russian Revolution – but this novel has been ... Read More »

Hot Shoe Shuffle Review
Could David Atkins really improve upon his classic hit “Hot Shoe Shuffle” for the next generation of theatre goers? I didn’t think it was at all possible. David was one of the original cast members and the founder of this magical show some 21 years ago and worked with Dein Perry and Adam Garcia back then. The longevity of the show is due to the simplicity and warmth of the characters and the storyline itself. To be honest, I’m not really lover of tap and I didn’t want to make the 2 hour drive to see the show. I couldn’t ... Read More »
Addams Family – Sydney
Charles Addams’ famous characters spring to life on stage in this wonderful story of love. It was my first time at the Capitol Theatre and I absolutely loved the ambiance and old world charm that the character of the building exudes. The staff are wonderful and their welcoming smile automatically set the scene for a memorable night. I’ve never been in a theatre where there is a ‘candy store’. Amazing! Who would of thought that Choc Tops and Popcorn are sold by walking vendors while you are seated. It reminded me of being at the ‘drive-in’. Hopefully some of our ... Read More »
It’s time to see Momentum
Last night I had the pleasure of staying at the prestigious Jupiters Hotel & Casino on the Gold Coast so I could watch and review the property’s newest stage spectacular, Momentum. I find myself in a unique position tonight trying to search for the right adjectives to explain what I saw. Even last night, post show I thought about a tagline to explain the show and some 12 hours later I’m still searching. It’s testament to Mayumana’s production and creative team as this is exactly what they set out to achieve. The show premiered in Spain in 2008 and each ... Read More »
Cavalia Review – Brisbane
How does one sum up Cavalia? Every now and again there are moments in time when emotions stop you from speaking the right words. Cavalia was one of those special moments. Even as a seasoned reviewer it’s sometimes difficult to put into words the spectacle that unfolds before your eyes, however I will try. Cavalia was the brainchild of Artistic Director and Creator Normand Latourelle. Normand took the magic he created in Cirque then added a twist – horses. His passion has been transferred across to his entire family and his extended family of performers as well. Cavalia opened up ... Read More »
Propel: The next step
In Propel, emerging choreographers Liesel Zink (Brisbane) and Lucas Jervies (Melbourne) flourish, each creating a new, 30-min work for the entire EDC ensemble, bringing in elements of set, costume and stage design, and presenting it in a theatre environment. Liesel’s piece entitled “Synapse” jarred the senses and explored the triggered emotions we use daily in our lives. In my opinion her choreography captured insecurity, strength, purpose and sorrow. She took us on a journey where 7 dancers shared differing emotions. Jack’s partnering was spectacular and Samantha Mitchell’s frailty was raw and believable. The pinnacle of this piece was the jigsaw ... Read More »
Tavaziza Dance – Greed Review
TAVAZIVA DANCE – ‘GREED’ University of Winchester 12th February 2013 Tonight Bawren Tavaziva kicked off a Spring 2013 tour with ‘Greed’, a new work for his 2004-founded company, Tavaziva Dance. It becomes clear from the offset that the movement style of Tavaziva Dance is quite unlike any other. Hailing from Zimbabwe, where he says he was first inspired by a visiting British choreographer, Tavaziva’s vocabulary is undulating, contorting, precise… and balletic. Pointed toes rapidly switch to flexed feet. Pivoting arabesques tumble to the ground effortlessly. Curiously tilting heads meet swaying, sloth-like arms. And the energy… explosive. Not once do ... South Pacific Review
South Pacific Opening Night Brisbane 2nd.January 2013 at the Lyric Theatre QPAC (Queensland Performing Arts Centre) After a beautiful and very warm Brisbane Day with 35 Degree temperatures, the festively attired crowd of Brisbane enthusiasts of all ages, ranging from young children to distinguished seniors, eagerly awaited the beginning of the overture at 19.30 precisely with great expectation. We were privileged to be able to occupy seats in the third front row thanks to the generosity of Dancehub. It was the 60th Anniversary since the first production in Brisbane of the musical by the Australian Opera Company, and two members ... Read More »
Tap Dogs Review
Tap dance on steroids I must admit that I was never an enthusiast of tap, even when my own daughter performed it. The stereo-typical 40′s style cabaret style just didn’t cut it for me. I’ve been fortunate to see modern tap, or as I call it, “street tap” enter the fold in recent times. This modern style has really taken hold across Australia and we must thank those visionary choreographers who have brought tap back to life, such as Dein Perry. The Tap Dogs experience I, like so many before me, have listened to stories about the Tap Dogs. The ... Read More »
Freedom
Jasmin Vardimon Company 22/11/12 Reviewer: Charlotte Constable, UK Freedom of speech, freedom of youth, freedom to explore, free love. Jasmin Vardimon always makes her work into a collage of every fibre of its theme. She not only plays with possibility, but pushes the boundaries – of her performers, of design, and of her audience. As the dim yellow lights barely illuminate the stage, I find that the set (a collaborative effort of Vardimon and Guy Bar-Amotz) captivates me immediately. With childlike wonder I drink in its jungle of hanging white tubes, green cables and knotted paper, and what appears to ... Read More »
